Borders
Alexandra has known life on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the border that separated Europe between East and West. As a child in East Germany she learned the importance of community, caring for others, and working hard. At the age of seven, she swam across the water border between Hungary and Austria with her parents, thus fleeing for the West - where she discovered a completely different culture of individualism and material comforts. Today she lives in the former East Berlin, a unique product of two opposing societies born in the same land. In this series, shot in medium format using a mix of positive and negative film stocks, Alexandra revisits the borders of her past and present - both real and imagined.
